Stone, sky and time

A rare image.
A lasting story.

Kandaha’s Surya Mandir is one of Saharsa’s defining heritage places: a medieval shrine whose carved doorway and monumental Sun image preserve the artistry of Mithila.

The district’s heritage record says a Sanskrit inscription on the temple’s door frame dates its construction to 1435 CE (Shaka Era 1357), during the reign of Narasimhadeva of the Karnata dynasty. It names Vamshadhara as the devotee who built the shrine. The district tourism listing describes the temple as a 14th-century monument.

Inside, Surya is shown riding a chariot drawn by seven horses, carved from a single granite slab. The richly decorated door frame—with floral designs and divine figures—remains a remarkable piece of medieval Mithila art.
